Arnau Gifreu is an expert in Audiovisual Communication, and he is specialized in television genres and digital media. In the seminar, he reviewed all the important moments in the music videos history, from its origins in the late XIX century to the current technological revolutions: The “Visual Music” by the exceptional and avant-garde director Oskar Fishinger in the 20’s. The creation of the socialising scopitone in the 60’s. The apparition of the transgressive film: “A Hard day’s night” by Richard Lester. The boom of video art in the 60’s in the figure of June Park. The establishment of the music videos in the 70’s and 80’s with phenomena such as “Bohemian Raphsody” by Queen, the launching of MTV channel or “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, directed by John Landis.
In addition, the braveness of directors who constantly try new uses of the genre has created a strong and new audio-visual language that has been consolidated and that is already a particularity of music videos.

Josep Coll, President of the Asessoría Jurídica de las Artes (Legal Adviser’s Office of Arts), gave a masterclass about the important aspects about copyright, and royalties needed to know in Spain. These property rights are not habitually used, mainly due to lack of knowledge by its authors and owners. In the seminar were also discussed the consequences of the current Audio visual Legislation in Spain. The fact of cataloguing music videos in Spain as derivative works and also considering the musical compositors as the unique beneficiaries of author’s property rights generated many complaints of directors. The director can only negotiate up to the 25% of these copyrights and, even in this case, the musical artist has the exclusivity of the use of the images (always that there is not a specific clause between them).
In conclusion, the seminar helped the audience to get to know more closely the legislation that revolves around music videos.
The Asesoría Jurídica de las Artes’ aim is to offer to their client's disposal a complete professional team (lawyers, economists, graduates, etc.) devoted to offer comprehensive advice and consultancy services in different subjects uniquely and exclusively related to Intellectual Property, as well as in other law matters. All of these, with the intention of addressing this comprehensive legal service to enterprises and professionals belonging to the sector, whether they are musicians, actors, painters, sculptors, etc. or managers, theatre companies, publishers, scriptwriters, photographers, sound and lighting technicians, production companies, audio, video and film producers, computer programmers, graphic and fashion designers, art galleries, etc.
